Hurst named All-SoCon as Spartans wrap up SoCon Championships

CLEMSON, SC – Taylor Hurst nearly broke a school record as he went on to claim All-SoCon honors in the 800 meters to lead UNC Greensboro during day two of the 2009 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Clemson, SC.

Hurst, a sophomore from Stone Mountain, GA, ran a 1:56.27 in the 800 meter finals to finish in third place and earn all-conference honors.  His time was also the second-fastest time in school history and a personal best.  Teammate Terry Wyatt just barely missed making All-Socon after finishing just behind Hurst in fourth place.

Freshman Joey Thompson shined once again on day two for the Spartans.  His time of 4:17.89 in the mile was the second-best time in school history and helping him earn All-Freshman honors for the second time in as many days.  His time was less than two seconds shy of the school record and was the best on the team this season by over seven seconds.

The group of Andy Clyne, Brian Carrington, Terry Wyatt and Taylor Hurst combined to run a 3:32.48 in the 4x400 relay.  That was a team-high this season by over two seconds.

On the women’s side, Sherrika Jordan ran the third-fastest time in school history in the mile with a time of 5:15.52.  Kerry Hartman earned All-Freshman team honors in the event with her time of 5:18.23.

Jordan and Hartman also joined Jade Farlow and Michelle Chewens in the 4x400 relay to finish third with a season-high time of 4:16.22.

The UNCG track & field team will now take a few weeks before resuming competition later this month to kick off the outdoor track & field season.
