EUGENE, ORE. – Joey Thompson represented UNC Greensboro recently as he wrapped up competition at the 2009 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Thompson, competing in the 1,500-meter race, began his bid for a spot on the U.S. National team by running a 3:50.98 in the prelims to qualify for the finals. That time was .08 seconds off of Thompson's personal best and school record that he set at the Tar Heel Classic in May.
In the finals, Thompson ran a time of 3:55.83 to finish in 10th, just .02 seconds behind Stephen Clark from Duke.
The top two runners in the event advanced to represent the United States in the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
The event capped an impressive freshman campaign for the runner from Columbia, Md. Thompson broke four school records during his first collegiate season, including three during the outdoor season. He broke the school record in the 3,000 meters during the indoor season and broke the 1,500-, 3,000-, and 5,000-meter records in the outdoor season.
