Thompson breaks school record at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C.Joey Thompson broke the school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to lead UNCG on the second and final day of the Raleigh Relays on Saturday at Paul Derr Track on the campus on NC State.

Thompson, who was running in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the first time in his career, ran a time of 9:15.73 to finish in fourth place in his event. That time broke the previous school record by just over eight seconds, which was set by teammate AJ Savoia back in 2008.

Jermaine Coore also had a nice day in his 1,500 meter race. He finished in second place with a time of 3:58.73.

Taylor Day also cut 15 seconds off his previous personal-best in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:53.30.

The Spartans return to competition next weekend at the Liberty Collegiate beginning on Friday.
