Pair of school records fall at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.Joey Thompson and Paul Katam each shattered his own school record to lead UNCG at the prestigious Penn Relay Carnival in front of 22,750 people on Thursday.

Thompson broke the previous school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase after finishing in sixth in a time of 9:06.47. His time broke his own school record he set earlier this year at the Raleigh Relays by over nine seconds.

Katam set a new mark in the 10,000 meters by an astounding minute and 38 seconds. He finished the race in seventh place with a time of 29:55.65. That broke the previous mark of 31:33.35 set in 2000 by Rob Ball.

Ashley Schnell also had a nice day as she finished the 3,000 meters in a time of 16:38.63, which was just three seconds off the school record she set at the Raleigh Relays.

The Spartans return to action next Sunday as they compete at the Duke Twilight.
