SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG sophomore Paul Chelimo has been named the Southern Conference Men's Indoor Track and Athlete of the Week. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
This is the second time in the past three weeks that Chelimo has earned this award.
Chelimo won the Ryan Shay 3,000-meter race at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational on Saturday. The Kenyan's time of 7:49.87 is a personal record by 22 seconds and broke the school record by 26 seconds.
With his performance at the Meyo Invite, Chelimo qualified for the NCAA Championship in Boise, Idaho and currently ranks third nationally in the 3,000 meters.
The Spartan team will split up this weekend between the Liberty Quad in Lynchburg, Va., and the Spire Invitational in Ohio before competing in the 2012 Southern Conference Indoor Championship.
