Boise, Idaho and Wilmington, N.C. – UNCG sophomore Paul Chelimo finished in fourth place in the 3,000 meter race at the 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championship to earn All-America honors on Saturday evening at Jacksons Indoor Track.
Chelimo became the first student-athlete from UNCG to earn All-American accolades in indoor track. The SoCon Champion in the mile also earned All-America honors during the cross country season.
He completed the 3,000 meter race in a time of 7:50.26. He finished less than four seconds behind winner Lawi Lalang from Arizona, who also won the national championship during cross country season. His time was also less than half a second off of his school record that he set earlier this season at the Meyo Invitaitonal.
While Chelimo was wrapping up the indoor season, many of his teammates made the trip to Wilmington, N.C. for the UNCW Seahawk Invitational to kick off the outdoor season.
At the meet, senior Taylor Hurst helped lead the way with his fifth place finish in the 1,500 meters. His time of 3:58.63 set a new personal best and was just eight seconds off teammate Joey Thompson's school record.
Teammate Abraham Kemboi was right on his heels as he finished in sixth place in a time of 3:59.12. Tyron Alston also finished in the top-10 after running a 4:03.86.
Alston and Hurst also teamed with Corey Paige and John Teeter to finish in fourth place in the 4x400 meter relay. The team's time of 3:27.04 was just a second and a half off of the school record.
On the women's side, Kelly Montague and Jade Farlow each finished in the top-10 in the 1,500 meter after running a 4:54.96 and 4:56.02, respectively.
