Indoor And Outdoor Track & Field Schedules Released

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG track and field head coach Linh Nguyen announced the 2013 indoor and outdoor track and field schedules for the Spartans Thursday. The schedule includes nine indoor events, including the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., and 13 outdoor events, including the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.

The 2013 indoor track and field season gets underway Jan. 19 with the Wake Forest Invitational. The Spartans will split for two events the following weekend with particpants in both the Hokie Invitational and the UW Invitational in Seattle, Wash.

The indoor season kicks into high gear in February with four events leading up to the Southern Conference Championships as the Spartans participate in the Hilton Garden Invitational (Feb. 1-2), Liberty Quad (Feb. 8), Flotrack Husky Classic (Feb. 8-9) and the Kent Taylor Invitational (Feb. 16). The 2013 SoCon Indoor Championships will be held Feb. 23-24 in Winston-Salem at the JDL Fast Track. The 2013 NCAA Indoor National Championships will be held in Fayetteville, Ark., March 8-9.
 
Junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) leads the Spartans after earning All-America honors last year. Chelimo finished fourth in the 3,000-meter race at the 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, becoming the first student-athlete from UNCG to earn All-America accolades in indoor track.
 
The 2013 outdoor campaign gets underway March 8-9 at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational. The Spartans will also participate in the Wake Forest Open (March 15-16), Kent Taylor Invitational (March 22-23), Raleigh Relays (March 29-30) and the Stanford Invitational (March 29-30) to round out the first month of the outdoor season.
 
UNCG continues the season with the Duke Invitational April 5-6 and the Joe Hilton Invitational April 13 as the final tune-ups before the league championships. The 2013 SoCon Outdoor Championships will be held in Statesboro, Ga., hosted by Georgia Southern.
 
After the SoCon Championships, the Spartans will run in the Payton Jordan Invitational (April 28), the Duke Twilight (May 5) and the Virginia Challenge (May 10-11). The 2013 NCAA East Preliminary will take place May 23-25 in Greensboro, hosted by North Carolina A&T. The NCAA Outdoor National Championships conclude the season June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
 
Chelimo earned his second All-America honor of the year after finishing second overall in the 5,000-meter race at the NCAA Outdoor championship, finishing less than one second from becoming the first individual national title-winner in UNCG's Division I history. Sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) earned second team All-America accolades after placing ninth overall in the 10,000-meter race at the national championships.
