Indoor Track And Field Participates At Wake Forest Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UNCG indoor track and field program opened the 2013 indoor track and field season Saturday at the Wake Forest Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. The men's track and field program finished 10th overall with a score of 23, while the women's program placed 12th with 14 points.

Leading the way for the men's program is sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho), who posted the Spartans lone win on the day. Katam took first place overall in the men's one mile run with a time of 4:11.90, winning by over six seconds over his nearest competitor. His 4:11.90 time is a personal-best, improving his previous time of 4:18.83 set last season at the Dick Taylor Invite.

Junior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) finished second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:38.69, finishing less than one second out of the top spot won by Dakota Peachee of High Point (8:37.75). Freshman Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) posted a sixth place finish in the race in his first indoor meet of his career with a time of 8:51.93.

Rounding out the men's top finishers was sophomore Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) finished seventh in the 5,000-meter run, recoding a time of 15:58.68.

Leading the way for the women's program is junior Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point) who posted the top women's finish with a second place effort in the 800-meter race. Hall posted a time of 2:19.20 to finish behind Hayley McMahon of the College of Charleston (2:14.89).

Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) turned in a fourth place finish in the one-mile run with a time of 5:02.68 to finish behind her sister Shaina Sumney who was running unattached and won the event in a time of 4:56.27. Freshman Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) finished eighth in the one-mile distance in her first indoor track meet of her collegiate score with a time of 6:!5.58.

The UNCG track and field programs return to action next weekend with the team splitting between two events at the Hokie Invitational and the UW Invitational.
