Track and Field Takes Part In Hilton Garden Invitational This Weekend
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG indoor track and field programs continued competition this weekend as the Spartans return to the JDL Fast Track for the second time this season when they take part in the Hilton Garden Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Spartans already participated in one event at the JDL Fast Track this season, taking part in the Wake Forest Invitational in the opening weekend of the indoor season.
Junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) will make his indoor track and field season debut this weekend running in the mile event Saturday evening. Chelimo, who earned Indoor All-America honors last season in the 3,000-meters, missed the first two weeks of the season coming back from an injury. He has the ninth-seeded time in the mile run at 4:02.80, set last season at the Spire Invitational. The mile run this weekend will feature both collegiate and professional runners.
Additionally, freshman Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) is seeded 28th in the mile event with a time of 4:18.0. Junior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) is 31st in the mile with a time of 4:20.00 during his career.
The Spartans' distance-medley-relay team is the second rated team enters the weekend with a seed time of 10:25.00, trailing only Radford. UNCG's DMR team consists of Katam, Tyron Alston (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance), John Elwood (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford) and Taylor Day (Cornelius, N.C./Hopewell).
The women's program is led by the distance-medley-relay team as the Spartans own the second rated time at 12:25.00. The relay consists of Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity), freshman Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake), junior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnston) and junior Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point).
Additionally, Montague is the Spartans top rated individual at the event with the eighth seeded time in the 5,000-meter distance at 18:20.00.
