Men's Track and Field Concludes Hilton Garden Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UNCG men's track and field team concluded play at the Hilton Garden Invitational Saturday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. The two-day event marked the second time this indoor season that UNCG has run at the JDL Fast Track.

Junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) made his indoor debut in the Elite Mile Run which included both the top collegiate runners and professional runners. Chelimo placed seventh in the 11-man race and was the second fastest time of a collegiate runner, turning in a time of 4:09.41. The top three finishers in the Elite race were all under the four-minute time, a first in the state of North Carolina.

Junior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) won his heat in the mile-run (section three), posting a personal-best time of 4:21.63. Freshman Josh Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) ran his first mile event and placed sixth with a time of 4:26.03.

The Spartans posted a third-place finish in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:36.52, trailing Radford's top time of 10:16.31. Running for UNCG were junior Tyron Alston (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance), Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho), John Elwood (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford) and Taylor Day (Cornelius, N.C./Hopewell).

The Spartans return to action next weekend as a majority of the team will travel to the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational. Chelimo and Katam will head to Seattle, Wash., to take part in the prestigious Flotrack Husky Classic.
