Paul Katam And Chelsea Sumney Post School Records Friday

SEATTLE, Wash. – UNCG sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) and junior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) both broke school records in the 5,000-meter race at the prestigious Flotrack Husky Classic Friday night at Dempsey Indoor Track.

Katam finished fourth in his heat as he ran at the front of the pack for a majority of the race. He posted a time of 14:04.03, besting his previous school record by an astounding 15-plus seconds. His previous time of 14:19.86 was set at the Meyo Invitational last year.

Sumney, running in the fourth and final heat of the 5,000-meter race, posted a time of 16:50.84 to break her own record set last season at the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field championships. She trimmed four tenths of a second off her previous best time of 16:51.25.

Junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) is set to run in the 3,000-meter race Saturday at the Flotrack event. Live video is being streamed of the event with a link available at www.uncgspartans.com.
