Paul Katam Win SoCon Title In 5,000-Meters in Winston-Salem
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – UNCG sophomore Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) won his third Southern Conference title of his career Sunday afternoon posting a dominating performance in the 5,000-meter race at the 2013 SoCon Indoor Track and Field championships at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
Katam ran away from the field at the JDL Fast Track posting a personal-best time of 14:13.77 to claim the championship. He finished over 15 seconds in front of his nearest competitor as Davidon's Demetrios Pagonis posted a second-place finish with a time of 14:29.63. He was over 29 seconds in front of the third place finisher from Appalachian State.
Sunday's title marks his third SoCon championship in his first two years as a Spartan. He won the 10,000-meter race in the SoCon Outdoor Championships last spring and was part of UNCG's distance-medley relay championship team in last year's SoCon Indoor Championships.
Junior Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) pulled out of the race before it started. Chelimo won the 3,000-meter race at the SoCon Indoor Championships Saturday afternoon.
