GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG will look to build upon its success at the Southern Conference Championships two weeks ago as the Spartans travel to Louisville, Ky. on Saturday to compete at the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regionals at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
The women's 6k race will begin at 10 a.m. and the men will follow with their 10k race at 11:15 a.m. The top two teams in each race will earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. There is also the possibility for teams to earn bids if they meet certain criteria and individual bids could also be handed out.
This weekend, the men's team will be comprised of Brian Carrington, Andy Clyne, Jermaine Coore, Kenny Hinman, Mike Koech, AJ Savoia and Joey Thompson. Ginny Cronley, Tiffany Garber, Anna Grimes, Kerry Hartman, Kelly Montague, Ashley Schnell and Shaina Sumney will represent the women's team on Saturday.
Two weeks ago, the Spartan men earned runner-up honors at the SoCon Championships, while the women's team came in third place, just 11 points out of first.
Ashley Schnell was the top performer for the Spartans at the meet as she won the women's 5k race in a time of 17:39.98. For her efforts, she was named the SoCon Runner of the Year and earned first-team All-SoCon honors. Shaina Sumney was right behind her in fourth place to also earn first-team honors.
The men's team, currently ranked No. 14 in the Southeast Region, was led at the SoCon Championships by junior Joey Thompson, who earned runner-up honors. His performance earned him first-team All-SoCon honors and Mike Koech, who finished in fifth place, also earned first-team honors. AJ Savoia came in 13th place to be named second-team All-SoCon, as well.
