UNCG hosts Spartan Softball Classic this weekend
GREENSBORO, NC – The UNC Greensboro softball team opens its home slate this weekend when it hosts the UNCG Spartan Softball Classic. UNCG welcomes Campbell, Kent State, Ohio and Campbell to the UNCG Softball Stadium for the five-team tournament. All UNCG games will be available on Spartan All Access on a tape-delay basis.
The Spartans enter the weekend with a 1-4 record after last weekend’s Jacksonville University Tournament. UNCG picked up a win over Southern Illinois and recorded losses to Minnesota, Southern Illinois and host Jacksonville in tournament play.
UNCG is led by senior first baseman Jennifer Bonilla, who in 15 at-bats has six hits and two runs scored. She has smacked two doubles and driven in five runs. She also leads the team in putouts with 26. Senior outfielder Heather Branche has also rolled up some big numbers early this season. In 11 at-bats, she has recorded four hits and two runs scored. She also has two RBI.
Vanessa Oakes leads the way for the Spartans in the circle. She has a 1-0 record and has a 1.93 earned run average. She has made for appearances and has 16 strikeouts.
Campbell enters with a 3-0-1 record after playing series against Furman and South Carolina State last weekend. The Camels are led by Jessica Huffman, who has a .600 batting average and in 15 at-bats has six runs and nine hits. She has also hit two home runs, one double and has four RBI.
Ohio comes into the weekend with a 1-3 record after playing in the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill last weekend. The Bobcats defeated Coastal Carolina and fell to North Carolina, East Carolina and North Carolina State.
Shalena Petrich leads the Bobcats with a .462 batting average. In 13 at-bats she has recorded six hits, two runs scored and two RBI. She has one double and one triple on the season and has stolen four bases on five attempts.
Pitcher Candace Saucedo has a 1-1 record and has a 1.40 earned run average. Michelle Sauter, who has pitched 11.0 innings, has a 3.71 earned run average and has nine strikeouts.
Kent State and Morehead State will be opening their 2007 campaigns this weekend.
