Jennifer Bonilla and Puerto Rico begin play at the 2007 Pan American Games
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Spartan softball player Jennifer Bonilla, who was named to the Puerto Rico softball national team last week, will be on hand when Puerto Rico opens action at the 2007 Pan American games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this afternoon.
The Puerto Rico national team will take place in the eight team round-robin tournament with teams from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela and the United States. The United States is the reigning Pan American champion, taking the gold medal in the 2003 competition.
During the round robin competition each team will play two games per day with the top four teams advancing to the semifinal competition. There will be two semifinals with the second semifinal serving as an elimination game.
Puerto Rico opens action on day one at Noon against Canada and takes on Colombia at 3 pm.
