Softball signs four prep seniors to National Letters of Intent
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro has signed four high school seniors to National Letters of Intent to play softball for the Spartans next season, coach Jennifer Herzig announced Friday.
Katelyn Bedwell, Josie Felix, Aisha Figueroa and Ashley Reetz will all join UNCG as freshmen for the 2010-11 school year.
Bedwell, a catcher from Surrey, British Columbia, Canada played for the Washington LadyHawks Gold-Miller, the same team that produced UNCG players Emily Akiyama, Jordan Jewett and Ally Johnson. She played for the White Rock Renegades and the Victoria Devils club teams, as well, winning a provincial championship and finishing third in the Canadian championship with the Devils in 2008. A member of Softball Canada's Junior Women's National Team Athlete Pool, Bedwell was named one the top 17 Midget A players in British Columbia. Bedwell earned the Meritorious School Student Award at Elgin Park Secondary, which doesn't offer softball. She played soccer and volleyball for the Orcas. Bedwell, who played with the B.C. provincial baseball team from 2005-08, won a gold medal Canadian championship with that team and a gold medal provincial championship with the White Rock Volleyball Club.

Felix, a right-handed pitcher out of Carmel, Calif., is a three-time All-Mission Trail Athletic League performer after earning the honor as a sophomore at Carmel High School and the last two years at the Stevenson School. Felix went undefeated in league play after transferring to Stevenson, helping the Pirates to the 2009 MTAL title and a spot in the Central Coast Section Division III championship game. Felix tossed a five-hitter in the semifinals, pitching Stevenson past division-rival Notre Dame Salinas for the first time in 17 years. As a sophomore at Carmel, Felix went 12-2 in the MTAL, helping the Padres to the CSS playoffs, and led the league in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. Felix pitched in the ASA "A" Nationals with the San Jose Lady Sharks in 2007 and with Sorcerer in 2008.
Reetz, an outfielder from Chesapeake, Va., was a two-time All-Southeastern District, All-Eastern Region, All-Tidewater and all-state selection for Great Bridge High School. Reetz hit .484 with 19 stolen bases in 2009, helping the Wildcats to a 24-3 record and the Group AAA state title. She earned the Principal Award and was a Chesapeake Scholar Athlete in 2008 and 2009. Reetz played two years for Legends Gold.
Figueroa, a shortstop out of Virginia Beach, Va., was a two-time All-Eastern Region performer for Ocean Lakes High School, taking second-team honors in 2008 and first-team honors in 2009. A two-time All-Tidewater pick, Figueroa hit .419 in 2009 only struck out three times. The team MVP was 36-for-39 in stolen base attempts and helped Ocean Lakes to a district title and the Eastern Region semifinals. Figueroa also excelled in the classroom, as she was a member of the Honor Roll and the National Honor Society.
The incoming class will join a UNCG team that went 27-30 overall and 12-11 in the Southern Conference in 2010. The Spartans finished with a winning league record for the first time since 2003 and advanced to the SoCon Championship title game for the first time in school history.
