Harrrell named SoCon Pitcher of the Month for May
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro senior Amber Harrell was named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Month for May, the league office announced Thursday.
Harrell turned in an impressive last month of the season to wrap up her career, highlighted by taking Southern Conference Championship Most Outstanding Player and All-Tournament honors.
The McDonough, Ga., native went 4-3 with a 1.82 ERA in May, including a 2-1 mark with a 1.47 ERA at the tournament, where she appeared in all four games, striking out 17 and not issuing a single walk in 19 innings.
Harrell opened her tournament by nearly no-hitting top-seeded Chattanooga on May 13, falling one out shy of her first career no-no before settling for the one-hitter. Hours later, she took the loss against eventual champion Elon, striking out seven and allowing just two runs in four innings but getting little run support.
The following day, in a must-win elimination game, Harrell allowed just an unearned run in seven innings of work against Georgia Southern to send UNCG to its first-ever title game. Harrell worked an inning of relief against Elon in the title game, allowing a run one hit.
Harrell opened her month with a tough-luck loss to Chattanooga on May 1, allowing just two earned runs as the Lady Mocs took an extra-inning win. Harrell got her revenge the next day, striking out seven and tossing a four-hit shutout to send herself and the rest of UNCG's seniors out winners on Senior Day.
Harrell appeared in all three of UNCG's games at Samford to end the regular season, getting the win on May 8. She did not allow an earned run in seven innings of work, striking out seven. She took the loss the following day on a walk-off homer, but struck out 10.
For the month, she struck out 48 and walked just 10, appearing in all 10 of UNCG's games.
Harrell finished the season with a career-high 15 wins and pushed her own school strikeout record to 657 for her career. In addition to earning three SoCon Pitcher of the Week awards this season, she also earned her first all-conference honors as a senior, taking a spot on the All-SoCon Second Team.
