GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball head coach Janelle Breneman announced a challenging 2013 slate Thursday that includes three NCAA regional participants in Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Southern Conference Tournament champion Georgia Southern. The Spartans return 11 players from last season's squad that finished with a 22-34 record and welcome in five freshmen to the mix.
"I look forward to taking the field on February 9th with an eager, prepared and competitive Spartan team," said Breneman. "We have a good balance of teams that will challenge us and prepare us for the Southern Conference. The SoCon has shown a lot of parity and we are excited to be the host of the conference tournament."
UNCG will open its season in Charleston, S.C. to take part in the Charleston Southern Tournament from Feb. 9-10 starting with George Mason Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. The Spartans will also face tournament host Charleston Southern and a second game against George Mason to wrap up the tournament.
The Spartans are at home for the first time from Feb. 22-24 when they host the UNCG Spartan Classic at the UNCG Softball Stadium. The 2013 field includes NEC Tournament runner-up Quinnipiac, Drexel and C-USA Tournament finalist Marshall. Each team will play five games over the weekend.
UNCG gets back on the road for the Winthrop Tournament from March 1-3 that includes five teams in Dayton, Hartford, Rhode Island, Virginia and Monouth. Just two days later, the Spartans remain on the road to face Knoxville Regional runner-up Virginia Tech who is coming off a 42-win campaign falling just short against SEC power Tennessee.
On March 9, the Spartans open the Southern Conference slate with a doubleheader at UNCG Softball Stadium against Samford followed by a single game Sunday to finish the three game series against the Bulldogs.
The Spartans will step back out of conference play to host Atlantic 10 member Charlotte for a doubleheader on March 14. The Blue and Gold return to SoCon action on the road against Western Carolina for a three-game set on Match 16-17.
UNCG welcomes CAA foe Towson to the UNCG Softball Stadium on March 20 while a doubleheader at North Carolina A & T follows on March 21.
SoCon series against Furman (March 23-24) and a road series against Elon (March 29-March 30) follow that, with a doubleheader at NC Central on April 4 wrap up a five-game stretch on the road.
Liberty comes to Greensboro for a single game on April 10 before the Spartans host SoCon rival Appalachian State for a three-game series from April 13-14.
The Blue and Gold head out on the road for a key seven-game stretch that includes SoCon series at Chattanooga (April 20-21) and a single game against UNC in Chapel Hill, N.C. on April 24. The Tar Heels finished the 2012 season with a 43-15 record and to the Athens Regional in the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans finish the road trip with a three-game series against Georgia Southern, the defending SoCon Tournament champion (April 27-28).
UNCG closes the regular season at home, hosting College of Charleston on May 4-5.
The 2013 Southern Conference Softball Championship will take place in Greensboro, N.C. on Wednesday, May 8th through Saturday, May 11th. The event will be hosted on the campus of UNCG. This will be the 20th annual Southern Conference Softball Championship. All nine softball teams will participate in the championship and the winner will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA regional softball tournament.
