Lindsay Thomas Named Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Ca./Northwood) has collected another weekly award in being named the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. The selections are made by the Southern Conference office.
"Lindsay had an outstanding weekend offensively and defensively behind the plate," said head coach Janelle Breneman. "Her composure in the box allowed her to get pitches she could drive. Not only is Lindsay a talented player but she has worked extremely hard in the offseason and throughout the spring to prepare for her rookie campaign."
Thomas led the Spartans to their first 3-0 start since the 2004 season after taking down George Mason twice (W, 2-1, W, 5-4) and tournament host Charleston Southern (W, 5-4) at opening weekend in Charleston, S.C. She led the team with a .500 batting average with a home run in all three games, including two game-winning home runs against George Mason and Charleston Southern.
The Irvine, Calif. native, blasted her first career hit over the fence against George Mason in game one helping the Spartans win 2-1. In game two, Thomas completed a comeback victory against Charleston Southern by belting a game-winning solo shot to win 5-4. In the finale, Thomas helped UNCG rally again with a tiebreaking two-run bomb to defeat George Mason again 5-4.
Thomas finished the weekend with four RBI and a team-leading 1.625 slugging percentage. UNCG returns to action this weekend at the Alabama State Invitational Friday, Feb. 15 against Belmont at 11 a.m. The Spartans will face Alabama State, Belmont twice and Eastern Illinois twice.
Also receiving nominations for player of the week Elon's Tomeka Watson, Furman's Lauren Collier, Georgia Southern's Kourtny Thomas, Samford's Madison Dickey, Chattanooga's Sara Poteat, and Western Carolina's Shemekia Scotton.
