Softball Travels to Western Carolina for SoCon Series

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The UNCG softball team heads to Cullowhee, N.C. for a three-game series against Western Carolina March 16-17 at the Catamount Softball Complex. The Spartans will start with a doubleheader Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m.

UNCG (18-4, 2-1 SoCon) is coming off a nonconference mid-week split against Charlotte after winning game one, 8-6, but falling 8-4 in game two Thursday night at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans have hit 15 home runs as a team, including a grand slam by senior Eileen Horsmon(Dunkirk, Md./Northern) against Charlotte in game two Thursday night. Freshman Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) leads the team with nine home runs, which is tied for 12th in the nation.

The Blue and Gold have three hitters hitting over .350 in Thomas, Horsmon and senior Heather Robb (Apex, N.C./Middle Creek). Thomas paces the team with a .397 average on 27 hits with 19 RBI. Horsmon sits in a tie for second batting .353 on 24 hits, nine doubles, one home run and 13 RBI. Robb also tied for second at .353 with four doubles, a triple, 10 RBI and seven runs scored.

The pitching staff is led by redshirt junior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) who holds a 10-1 record with a 1.43ERA and 75 strikeouts. Hanks also has earned three saves, which sits in a tie for first in the nation. Freshman Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) has a 3-0 record with a 2.31 ERA and 20 strikeouts. Classmate Kelly Lupton(Galloway, N.J./Absegami) is 3-1 in seven appearances with a save and 35 strikeouts. 

The Catamounts are 8-14, 1-2 SoCon after a split against Winthrop this past Wednesday. WCU dropped the first game, 7-5, before winning game two, 8-7. Western Carolina also has hit 15 home runs this season as senior Haley Pace leads the way with four and 12 RBI. In the circle, sophomore Jordan Garrett has a 6-7 record and leads the SoCon in strikeouts with 113 in 85 innings. UNCG leads Western Carolina in the all-time series 11-10. The Spartans have won the last five meetings, including a sweep last season at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
