Softball Hosts Towson; Doubleheader At NC A&T during Midweek
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team returns home for a single game against Towson Wednesday, March 20 at 5 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans will travel to cross-town rival North Carolina A&T for a doubleheader Thursday, March 21 starting at 2 p.m. at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex.
UNCG has a 21-4 record heading into the midweek contests, which is the 14th best winning percentage in the nation out of 290 teams. The Blue and Gold are coming off a SoCon series sweep against Western Carolina after taking both games in the doubleheader last Saturday, 5-1, 7-3 and a run-rule victory in the finale, 11-1 in five innings.
The Spartans have hit 19 home runs as a team with freshman Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) leading the team with 11 home runs, which is tied for eighth in the nation.
The Blue and Gold have four hitters hitting over .345 in Thomas, junior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park), freshman Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) and senior Eileen Horsmon (Dunkirk, Md./Northern). Thomas paces the team with a .403 average on 31 hits with 24 RBI. Bedwell sits in second batting .377 on 29 hits, five doubles, five home runs and 21 RBI. Vega is hitting .349 on 30 hits, seven doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI, while Horsmon is at .346 with nine doubles, one triple, one home run and 14 RBI.
The pitching staff is led by redshirt junior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) who holds a 12-1 record with a 1.39 ERA and 88 strikeouts. Hanks also has earned three saves, which sits in a tie for seventh in the nation. Freshman Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) has a 3-0 record with a 2.31 ERA and 20 strikeouts. Classmate Kelly Lupton(Galloway, N.J./Absegami) is 3-1 in nine appearances with two saves and 35 strikeouts. Sophomore Erica Navarette (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills) picked up her third win over the weekend and dropped her ERA to 3.04 on the season.
Towson will play a doubleheader on Tuesday against SoCon foe Furman behind entertaining UNCG with a single game Wednesday. The Tigers are 14-12-1 on the season and are led by Delanie Dunham, who has a .380 average with two doubles, a triple, three home runs and 21 RBI. In the circle, Katie Lingmai has a 5-7 record, including five complete games with 74 strikeouts in 66.1 innings of work.
The Aggies have had a tough season sitting at 1-16 with their only win coming against Maryland-Eastern Shore. NC A&T is led by Detavia Keenan, who has a .368 average on 14 hits, seven runs scored and a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen bases. In the circle, Ashira Dobison has thrown 51 innings with two complete games to lead the pitching staff.
