Byrd, Boone named to SoCon All-Media team
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – UNC Greensboro’s backcourt duo of Jasmine Byrd and Kristen Boone were selected to the 2006-07 Southern Conference Sports Media Association all-media squad as selected by media professionals from around the region. Boone earned first team honors, while Byrd landed on the second team.
Western Carolina landed the most players on the all-conference team with three. Juniors Monique Dawson and Chevon Keith were named to the first team with sophomore Lauren Powell making the second team. UCG and Davidson both landed two players while Appalachian State and Georgia Southern each had one player honored.
First team honorees included: Appalachian State’s Whitney Tossie, Chattanooga’s Alex Anderson and Monique Dawson and Chevon Keith from Western Carolina. Davidson’s Katie Hamilton and Tia Washington, Georgia Southern’s Tiffany Brown and Western Carolina’s Lauren Powell were all second team honorees.
Chattanooga’s Alex Anderson was named the 2007 Player of the Year and Georgia Southern’s Carolyn Whitney was named Freshmen of the Year. Western Carolina’s Kellie Harper was named Coach of the Year.
Boone, a 5-5 junior from Upper Marlboro, MD, has started all 30 games this season. She is averaging 10.9 points per game and is second in the conference in steals at 3.0 per game. That also ranks No. 14 in the nation. Boone, who recorded 11 steals in a game this season against UNC Wilmington, is already the school’s all-team leader in steals with 309.
Byrd, a 5-7 senior from Dumfries, VA, started all 30 games this season and averaged a team-best 15.5 points per contest. She enters the SoCon Tournament in 12th place on UNCG’s career scoring list with 1,228 points. She is also sixth on the career three-point list with 193. She scored in double figures in 24 of 30 games this season.
