UNCG women top Thermal Abano 84-58, move to 2-0 on tour

THERMAL ABANO, Italy – The UNC Greensboro women’s basketball team continued its winning ways in Italy with an 84-58 win over Italian league B level team Thermal Abano on Wednesday night.

The Spartans had five players in doubles figures with junior forward Jasmine Dixon leading the way with 16 points. Kristen Boone, KaLeah Latham and Gini Grimsley each tallied 11 points, while Brittany Frazier added 10 points.

The Spartans were running on very little sleep after arriving at their hotel in Lake Como at 2 am and then spending the day sightseeing in Venice. But they didn’t look like a tired team after overcoming a slow start. They managed to come out and put the game out of reach in the middle of the second quarter, coasting to its second win.

In the first frame, UNCG pushed out to a five-point lead midway through the first half. Thermal kept the margin at five as UNCG held a 23-18 lead at the end of the quarter. The Spartans started to hit their rhythm in the opening minutes of the second frame, led by Ashley Mullins. Mullins, who was appearing in just her second game after injuring her thumb in early December.  netted five points in UNCG’s 7-0 run to open the quarter. That sparked UNCG to a 45-23 lead at halftime.

Thermal made a run early in the second half to get back within 16 but UNCG held its ground from there. The Italians could not get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
