UNCG announces 2006-07 women’s hoop schedule

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro women’s basketball coach Lynne Agee announced Monday her schedule for the upcoming 2006-07 season, featuring 15 home games, including a date in the Greensboro Coliseum against Virginia Tech and a trip to the Maryland Tournament to play the defending national champion Terrapins.

UNCG will take part in two mid-season tournaments. The first is the annual UNCG Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday and Saturday, November 24 and 25 at Fleming Gym in Greensboro. The Spartans welcome Providence, Longwood and cross-town rival North Carolina A&T to the two-day holiday tournament.

The Spartans, along with Liberty and Marist, will compete in the Maryland Tournament on December 29 and 30 in College Park, MD. UNCG will take on the host Terrapins in the opening round and will be the Spartans first ever encounter against a defending national champion at the Division I level.

UNCG returns to the Greensboro Coliseum for the first time since 2001 to host Virginia Tech on January 10 as part of a doubleheader with the men’s programs. The Hokies were 21-10 last year and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Spartans will play an exhibition with Division II Catawba on November 3 at Fleming. Nine days later, UNCG hosts UNC Wilmington in the regular season opener on November 12. UNCG will also entertain Big South Conference foes Coastal Carolina and High Point on December 16 and 18 respectively. In addition, the Spartans will play nine Southern Conference games at Fleming Gym.

Another highlight of the season is a trip to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina. The Tar Heels are coming off a 33-2 record last season and finished first in the ACC with a 13-1 league slate. Both losses came to Maryland with the second setback occurring in the national semifinals.

The Spartans also travel to in-state rivals Campbell and Charlotte in mid-November.

UNCG expects its top-nine scorers and 11 players back from last season’s squad led by all-conference guard Kristen Boone. The Spartans advanced to the SoCon Tournament Championship game and finished the year with an 18-12 record and a second place finish in the regular season standings with a 12-6 league slate.

Single game and season tickets go on sale September 1. For more information, contact the UNCG ticket office at (336) 334-3250.
