UNCG and the Southern Conference “Think Pink” on Feb. 9

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro in conjunction with the Southern Conference and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association has designated Saturday, February 9th’s game against Western Carolina as “Think Pink” day.

The Southern Conference has designated the day as “Think Pink” day at all women’s basketball games played in the Conference that day. The initiative is part of the national effort to raise awareness of breast cancer treatment, prevention and research.

At each of the five SoCon women’s basketball games that day, players, coaches, managers and scorer’s table personnel will wear pink ribbons. Ladies’ compacts -- featuring the words “Think Pink,” and bearing the Southern Conference’s 25th Anniversary of Women’s Sports logo, will be distributed to the first 150 females in attendance at each site.

“We are fully supportive of the WBCA’s efforts to shine a greater light on the importance of breast cancer awareness and prevention,” said John Iamarino, Commissioner of the Southern Conference. “Our basketball teams can be ambassadors to help deliver this message to our local communities.”

The five SoCon women’s basketball games scheduled are Davidson at Appalachian State, Chattanooga at Elon, College of Charleston at Furman, Western Carolina at UNC Greensboro, and Georgia Southern at Wofford. Davidson, a road team on February 9, has announced that it will organize a “Think Pink” for its community on Friday, February 15 when it hosts UNC Greensboro.

In addition to the initiatives being promoted by the Southern Conference, UNCG will also be doing additional promotions to get fans to “Think Pink” in support of breast cancer. The UNCG women’s basketball team will be wearing special pink warm-up T-shirts and have the option of wearing pink ribbons on their jerseys.

Pepsi will be providing free samples of strawberry flavored Propel Invigorating Water and Ben and Jerry’s will provide one free scoop of Strawberry Kiwi sorbet to the first 100 youth in attendance. The first 150 fans will receive a free “Think Pink” T-shirt, compliments of the UNCG Office of Campus Activities and Programs and all fans will receive a free pink breast cancer ribbon courtesy of the American Cancer Society and UNCG Student Health Services.

Also at halftime the American Cancer Society and the UNCG Relay for Life Chapter will be “passing the hat” to collect donations and will also be taking donations for luminaries throughout the game.

The Southern Conference is in its 87th year of providing quality competition for young men and women. The Conference consists of 11 institutions located in four states. The 2007-08 year marks the 25th Anniversary of women’s championship sports in the Conference. More than 3,000 student-athletes compete in the 19 championship sports sponsored by the SoCon.
