UNCG falls to Elon, 59-48 in SoCon womens basketball action
ELON, NC – The UNC Greensboro women’s basketball team dropped a Southern Conference women’s basketball game, 59-48, to backyard rival Elon Saturday afternoon in Alumni Gym.
UNCG (5-22, 3-13 SoCon) was led by Lakiah Hyson, Brittany Frazier and Kemena Brooks who each tallied eight points while Frazier had a game-high seven rebounds. UNCG shot 37.7 percent from the field on 20-of-53 shooting and recorded 36 rebounds in the loss.
“I was disappointed in the second half,” said coach Lynne Agee. “We were ice cold both in the paint and from long range and more importantly we didn’t do well on the defensive end of the floor, which really hurt our chances late in the game.
Elon (9-19, 4-12 SoCon) had three players in double figures and was led by Kitara McMoore who had a game-high 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Tierra Bumbrey and Tiffany Davis each contributed 11 points in the win. The Phoenix shot 40.0 percent from the field on 20-50 shooting and had 35 rebounds.
Monique Floyd came out of the break on fire and scored four of UNCG first six points of the second half as the Spartans extended their lead to 28-25 but Elon used back-to-back buckets to take a 35-30 lead, their first lead of more than two points in the game.
A long jumper from Hyson cut the lead to two points and UNCG was able to force a steal on the next possession but turnovers on the next three possessions kept the 37-33 lead with Elon.
The teams began to trade buckets midway through the half and got some production off the bench from Ashley Ling who hit a trey to cut the lead to 41-40 at the 8:36 mark. Elon went on a 6-0 run to take a 47-40 lead at the 6:14 mark but two free throws from Jasmine Dixon cut the lead to five points.
The Phoenix were able to go extend their lead to 10-points and UNCG got as close as six points in the final minute and thirty seven seconds but couldn’t turn the corner as they dropped their seventh consecutive game.
The teams played evenly through the first several minutes but back-to-back three pointers from Tierra Bumbrey gave Elon a 10-8 lead but a quick bucket on the inside from Monique Floyd tied the game up with 13:08 remaining in the first stanza and from that point the teams traded buckets.
The Spartans did a terrific job on the glass and were able to limit Elon to only one shot early in the shot clock which resulted in a 17-14, UNCG lead with just over eight minutes left. Elon wouldn’t go away and used a bucket in the paint to tie the game at 17-17, the sixth tie of the half before UNCG went on a 4-0 run to take a 20-17 lead but a triple from Elon’s Julie Taylor cut the lead to one at the 5:32 mark.
With UNCG holding a 24-22 lead and Elon with the ball, a block from Gini Grimsley ended the scoring threat and the Spartans went into the intermission with a 24-22 lead. Brittany Frazier and Tierra Bumbrey led all-scorers with six points while Frazier had a game-high seven rebounds.
The Spartans return home to Fleming Gym for their final two regular-season games. UNCG hosts Wofford Thursday at 5 pm as a part of a doubleheader with the UNCG men, who take on Chattanooga at 7:30 pm.
