UNCG women’s basketball inks four during NLI early period

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro women’s basketball coach Lynne Agee announced Friday the commitments of three high school student-athletes and one junior college player during the National Letter of Intent early signing period.

The Spartans received signed NLI’s from, Amy Clapper a 6-2 forward from Newark, OH, Dorothy Corbett, a 6-3 center from Kelly, NC, Sarah Folwell, a 6-0 forward from Graham, NC, and Christina Weaver, a 5-10 guard from Covington, KY.

“We are very excited about this class,” said Agee, who is in her 27th season on the UNCG sidelines and 30th overall as a head coach. “We were able to add some experience in the post with the addition of Corbett and added players who each have strengths that will fit well into our system.”

Clapper, who attends Newark Catholic, averaged 14.6 points and 9.8 rebounds as a junior for head coach Matt Schmelzer and lead her team to the district finals last season. She earned honorable mention Division IV All-Ohio and was named Central District Player of the Year.

Corbett, who is in her second year at Louisburg JC, is averaging 13.6 points and 6.0 rebounds for head coach Mike Holloman. The Kelly, NC native played her high school basketball at East Bladen HS for head coach Patty Evers.

Weaver, a native of Covington, KY, averaged 15.1 points per game and 11.3 rebounds per game at Holmes HS for head coach Celeste Hill-Brockett. The 5-11 guard led her high school team to Kentucky Ninth Region runner-up honors a season ago.

Folwell, a local product who plays for head coach Sean Quinn at Southern Alamance HS averaged 13.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game as a junior.

The four players will join the Spartans for the 2008-09 academic year.

The Spartans are next in action Sunday when they head to Durham, NC, to take on No. 9 Duke in a non-conference game. First tip is set for 2 pm at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
