UNCG falls on the road to Longwood, 62-53
FARMVILLE, VA – The UNC Greensboro women’s basketball team fell to Longwood, 62-53 Wednesday night at Willett Hall.
UNCG (1-7) was led by Brittany Frazier who tallied a team-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field while pulling down seven rebounds. Sophomore Lakiah Hyson tallied a career-high nine points in the loss. The Spartans shot 39.0 percent from the field on 23-of-59 shooting and tallied a season-high 13 assists in the loss.
Longwood (5-5) was led by Keiva Small who tallied a game-high 25 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor while Odessa Williams led the Lancers with seven rebounds. The Lancers out rebounded the Spartans 40-32.
“I was extremely disappointed in the way we played tonight “said head coach Lynne Agee. “We didn’t execute and lost our composure at several key moments in the game and that had a direct effect on the outcome. We have a long layoff and will have to regroup in order to be ready for conference play.”
Longwood opened the second half with a 7-2 run to take a 38-35 lead at the 17:23 mark. The Spartans rallied and used a quick run to cut the lead to 40-39 but a three from Small coupled with free throws kept the lead with the Lancers.
Longwood used two three-pointers from Small and buckets from Sims to pull ahead 53-46 with just under seven minutes remaining. Longwood held UNCG without a field goal for two minutes and used a 6-0 run to take 59-46 lead, their largest of the game, at the 4:35 mark. The Spartans couldn’t find a way to stop the Lancers down the stretch and dropped their third road game of the season.
The opening minutes of the first half featured missed shots by both teams but after several minutes the teams settled in and two buckets from Monique Floyd put the Spartans ahead 4-0 but Longwood found two quick buckets to notch the game at the first media timeout.
Longwood went on a 10-0 run to open up a 14-4 lead before a bucket from Frazier ended UNCG’s nearly six minute drought without a bucket. The Spartans went on a run of their own and cut the lead to 19-15 behind buckets from Frazier and Agne Girstautaite.
UNCG battled back and was able to force the Lancers into several miscues which turned into points for the Spartans on the other end giving them a 23-2 1 lead with just over five minute remaining. The teams traded buckets for the next several minutes which featured two lead changes before closing the half with three straight buckets to take a 33-31 lead into the break.
Brittany Frazier led UNCG with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. UNCG shot a season-high 46.7 percent from the floor on 14-of-30 shooting while holding the Lancers to 34.5 percent from the floor in the first half.
UNCG will take 10 days off for exams before heading to Spartanburg, SC to open Southern Conference play at Wofford. Tip off is set for 6 pm at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
