Storylines
• UNCG hosts UNC Wilmington on Monday at Fleming Gymnasium for its 2010-11 home-opener. The Spartans bring an 0-1 record into the contest, while the Seahawks will be opening their season against UNCG.
• UNCG is 28-13 all-time in home-openers, including a 10-2 mark in its last 12. The Spartans are 14-7 in home-openers at Fleming Gym and have hosted UNCW for their home opener twice in their history, in 1993-94 and 2005-06. UNCG won both of those contests, by scores of 77-54 and 74-46, respectively.
• The Spartans are 10-5 all-time against UNCW, but the Seahawks have won two of the last three. The teams last met in Wilmington, N.C., on Nov. 20, 2008, with the Seahawks taking a 53-50 win.
• UNCG opened its season at Clemson on Friday, falling 71-55. Redshirt senior Amanda Leigh scored a team-best 17 points for the Spartans, while senior Monique Floyd was also in double figures with 12. Sophomore Dayshaun Richbow also had a nice game, stuffing the stat sheet with a career-high nine assists, seven rebounds, six points and four steals. The Spartans held a 17-16 lead in the first half before the Tigers blew the game open with a 14-0 run.
• UNCG coach Lynne Agee is embarking on her 30th season at the helm for UNCG this season. With a 589-319 career record in her 33rd year on the sidelines, Agee is 12th among active coaches in terms of wins and 20th among Div. I coaches all-time.
• The Spartans return three starters from last year's 10-20 squad in seniors Floyd, Leigh and Kendra Smith. The trio, who serve as UNCG's captains this season, have plenty of experience under their belts, as Floyd is a three-year starter and Leigh is a two-year starter. Smith stepped into the starting lineup as a regular for the first time last season. The three combined for more than half of UNCG's 150 starts last year, starting 78 games among them. Together, they averaged 25.7 points per game, led by Leigh's 10.6.
• Leigh enters this season with a shot at setting the school record for career 3-pointers in just three seasons on the squad. Despite transferring from Winthrop after her freshman season, Leigh has vaulted up to fifth in school history with 115 3s. The school record of 193 was set by Jasmine Byrd from 2003-07, meaning Leigh, who hit 67 3-pointers last season, is just 78 back of Byrd's mark.
• Floyd could become just the 22nd player in school history to reach 1,000 career points this season. The Fairmont, N.C., native enters Monday night's game with 724 for her career, leaving her just 276 points shy of reaching the milestone. Floyd scored 292 points as a sophomore and 255 as a junior, meaning the mark is well within reach.
• UNCG is 191-73 all-time in Fleming Gym, posting 19 winning seasons in 21 in the facility.
•Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and two-time WNBA MVP Cynthia Cooper-Dyke is in her first season at the helm for UNCW. Cooper-Dyke spent the last five seasons as the head coach of Prairie View A&M, where she was a two-time Southwestern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
• The Seahawks return three starters from last year's squad, which went 12-19 overall and 6-12 to tie for ninth in the Colonial. UNCW is led by three-time All-CAA selection Brittany Blackwell, a senior forward who led the team in scoring (13.1), rebounding (7.8), assists (2.9) and steals (2.3) last year.
• UNCW downed Div. II UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, 70-44, in its lone exhibition. Five Seahawks were in double figures with Blackwell (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Martha White (11 points, 13 rebounds) recording double-doubles. Alisha Andrews and Treasure Johnson had 11 points apiece, while Kristen Hanzer had 10.
• The Seahawks were picked eighth in the CAA preseason poll. Blackwell was a preseason all-conference pick.
