Storylines
• UNCG heads down to Coral Gables, Fla., for the University of Miami's Mayfair Hotel and Spa Thanksgiving Tournament this weekend. The Spartans will face Eastern Illinois at 5 p.m. Friday then take on either Florida Atlantic or the host Hurricanes on Saturday.
• FAU and Miami will meet in Friday's second game, with the winner advancing to meet the winner of the UNCG-EIU game in the tournament championship at 7 p.m. Saturday. The consolation game will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday.
• UNCG's games this holiday weekend are the middle two in a stretch of four road games in a 10-day span. The Spartans dropped a 77-67 contest at Charleston Southern in Charleston, S.C., on Monday and will take on Morgan State in Baltimore, Md., on Dec. 1.
• The Spartans have never faced any of the three other teams in the Mayfair Hotel and Spa Thanksgiving Classic.
• Senior Monique Floyd scored a season-high 16 points and sophomore forward Sidnei Harmon had 12 in UNCG's loss at Charleston Southern on Monday. The duo accounted for 25 of UNCG's 42 second-half points, as Floyd had 13 and Harmon scored all 12 of her points after the break. Harmon went 6-for-6 from the floor in her first career start. Junior guard Jazz Weaver had a career-best five steals on the day.
• Harmon is making a serious case to solidify a spot in the starting rotation. In her two games this season, she has posted career highs in points both times, starting with 10 against UNC Wilmington on Nov. 15. With her 12 Monday night, she is now second on the team with an average of 11.0 per game. She is also working quite efficiently, as she is 10-for-13 from the floor this season.
• UNCG's backcourt appears set, with Floyd, Amanda Leigh and Dayshaun Richbow starting all three games thus far this season, but the frontcourt has been a different story. The Spartans have started a different combination in the post in all three games this year.
• Floyd leads UNCG this season with 13.3 points per game, while Harmon is second at 11.0 and Leigh is third at 10.3. Freshman Janae' Stevenson leads the Spartans with 6.0 rebounds per game, while Floyd (5.3), Harmon (5.0) and Richbow (5.0) all average at least five a game.
• Eastern Illinois is off to a 1-3 start on the season, opening with a 57-55 loss at Western Michigan before rebounding with an 81-73 win over Missouri. In-state foes Illinois State and Bradley handed the Panthers consecutive losses leading into the Miami tournament. EIU, the preseason pick to win the Ohio Valley Conference, has played its last two games without leading scorer and point guard Ta'Kenya Nixon, who averages 13.0 points per game. The Panthers are receiving votes in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
• Florida Atlantic brings a 2-3 record into this weekend's tournament. After opening the season with a 103-48 thumping of Webber International, the Owls lost three straight games to Kennesaw State, Jacksonville and North Florida – all teams from FAU's former conference, the Atlantic Sun. The Owls broke the skid with a 60-57 win over Eastern Kentucky on Monday, with Preseason All-Sun Belt third-teamer Lyrell Barfield – the Owls' lone senior – returning from a hand injury to score 11 points in her season debut.
• Miami has opened its season with a 3-1 mark, topping Kennesaw State, Miami (Ohio) and UAB and falling to then-No. 21 Nebraska. The Hurricanes feature a dynamic scoring duo in juniors Riquna Williams and Shenise Johnson, who average 22.5 and 21.0 points per game, respectively, after four games. Williams and Johnson, who recently became the youngest teammates in school history to reach the 1,000-point club, were named to the Naismith Preseason Watch List just this week. Johnson was also named to the preseason "Wade Watch" list for The State Farm Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year award. Miami was the WNIT runner-up last year, falling to Cal, 73-61.
