Floyd named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG senior guard Monique Floyd has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition Dec. 8-14, the league office announced Wednesday.

Floyd boasts a 3.80 grade point average and is majoring in recreation and parks management with a concentration in leisure services management.

The Fairmont, N.C., native scored a season-high 19 points to go with four rebounds and a team-best and season-high seven assists in UNCG's 73-58 win over Radford on Saturday. Fourteen of her points came in the second half.

Floyd went 8-for-10 from the floor against the Highlanders, scoring 12 straight UNCG points – including drawing fouls on three straight made buckets – in a second-half spurt that helped the Spartans pull away.

Her seven assists were one shy of her career high, while she had just two turnovers. She also added her first blocked shot of the season.

The award is the second of its kind for Floyd, who was also the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week on Jan. 10, 2010.

Floyd becomes UNCG's third Student-Athlete of the Week this academic year. Cross country runner Ashley Schnell took the honor twice in the fall, on Sept. 22 and Oct. 6.

UNCG's women's basketball team will open Southern Conference play Saturday when it hosts Wofford at 2 p.m. at Fleming Gym.
