SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG guard Monique Floyd has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for competition Dec. 14-20 after nearly averaging a double-double for the week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Floyd, a senior, averaged 19.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game as UNCG opened SoCon play with wins over Wofford and Furman. The Spartans downed Wofford 80-67 on Saturday and topped Furman 71-61 on Monday to stand alone atop the league standings after their first week of SoCon play.
Against Wofford, Floyd turned in her third career double-double and first this season, scoring a team-high 15 points and pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds to match her career high. Five of her rebounds came on the offensive end of the floor, while she added four assists and three steals in the win.
The Fairmont, N.C., native was even better against Furman on Monday, pouring in a career-high 23 points and nearly managing another double-double with a game-high eight rebounds. For the second time in as many games, half of her rebounds came on offense. She dished off another four assists and grabbed another three steals and did not commit a turnover.
Floyd also dominated on defense against the Paladins, switching to Furman's Kelly O'Connor after O'Connor scored 16 points in the first 14 minutes of play and holding her scoreless the rest of the way.
The award is the second of Floyd's career. She was also the SoCon Player of the Week on Feb. 24, 2009. Floyd is also the league's reigning Student-Athlete of the Week, as she took that honor on Wednesday.
Floyd and the rest of the Spartans, who ran their winning streak to three games this week and evened their overall record at 5-5, return to action on Friday, Dec. 31, at Davidson. That contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start in Davidson, N.C.
