SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG senior guard Monique Floyd has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition Jan. 12-18, the league office announced Wednesday.
Floyd owns a 3.79 grade point average and is majoring in recreation and parks management with a concentration in leisure services management.
The Fairmont, N.C., native scored a game-high 18 points to go with five rebounds, four assists and no turnovers in UNCG's lone game during the week, a 50-45 win at College of Charleston on Saturday. Floyd went 8-for-14 from the floor and was 2-for-2 at the free throw line as UNCG downed the Cougars on the road for the first time since the 2005-06 campaign.
The award is Floyd's second this season, as she also took the honor on Dec. 15. It is the third of her career, as she was also the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week on Jan. 10, 2010.
Wednesday's award is just the latest in a string of SoCon honors for Floyd this season. She was the league's player of the week on Dec. 21 and the SoCon Player of the Month for December.
Floyd is UNCG's leading scorer (13.5 points per game) and rebounder (6.3 per game) on the season and leads the SoCon in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.1).
Floyd becomes UNCG's fourth Student-Athlete of the Week this academic year. Cross country runner Ashley Schnell took the honor twice in the fall, on Sept. 22 and Oct. 6. UNCG is tied with Elon for the most in the conference this school year, as the schools have four each.
Coincidentally, UNCG's women's basketball team hosts Elon at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a battle of two of the three teams tied atop the SoCon standings. The Spartans, the Phoenix and Appalachian State all bring 6-2 records into Wednesday night's contests.
