Storylines
• UNCG will try for its first win of the season as it wraps up a three-game road swing at North Carolina Central on Saturday.
• The Spartans are 0-3 after losses to Liberty, No. 19/17 North Carolina and Radford to open the season.
• Sophomore Breonna Patterson exploded for a career-high 23 points in UNCG's 75-67 loss at Radford on Monday, more than doubling her previous career high of 11 points. The Spartans, who trailed by as many as 21 points in the first half, made things interesting in the second, riding Patterson and Natalie Headley, who also chipped in a career-high 13 points, to get back within five points twice in the final three minutes. UNCG couldn't complete the comeback, however, dropping its third straight.
• Patterson did all of her damage Monday without hitting a 3-pointer. The 5-4 guard from Greensboro, N.C., was 9-for-15 from the floor (0-for-3 from 3-point range) and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She also pulled down a career-high six rebounds, a game high.
• Headley, a redshirt sophomore who has been plagued by injuries throughout her career, played all 40 minutes Monday at Radford, becoming the first Spartan to play at least 40 minutes since Lakiah Hyson played 42 minutes in an overtime loss to Western Carolina on Feb. 14, 2009. Headley is the first UNCG player to do so in regulation since Amanda Eaton against Elon on Jan. 5, 2004.
• Patterson's big day vaulted her into the team scoring lead with 14.0 points per game, while Headley is second with 8.3. Freshman Jarae Savage leads the squad with 5.3 rebounds per game.
• UNCG is 3-0 against the Lady Eagles all-time and has an average margin of victory of 15.0 points per game in the series. The teams last met in 2009, with UNCG taking a 70-57 victory in Greensboro. Saturday's meeting will be the first between the squads when both are full-fledged Division I schools. The teams' first two meetings came when they were both Division II (1988 and 1990), while N.C. Central was in transition to DI in 2009.
• The Spartans are 23-8 all-time against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's current lineup. Not surprisingly, UNCG has faced crosstown rival North Carolina A&T more than any other MEAC school (18 times), with Morgan State and N.C. Central checking in at second with three meetings each. NCCU will be meeting UNCG for the first time as a MEAC member.
• N.C. Central went 5-25 last season, its last as a provisional DI school. NCCU, which was one of the founding members of the MEAC before leaving the league after the 1979-80 season, rejoined in 2010 and is eligible for league championships beginning this season.
• The Lady Eagles picked up their first win of the season Wednesday, topping NAIA school Morris College in Durham, N.C., 66-58. NCCU put four in double figures, with freshman Kabrina Truesdale leading the way with 15 points. Alesha Jenkins fell a rebound short of a double-double with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while Blaire Houston and Tenika Neely scored 13 points each. Truesdale, Jenkins and Neely all notched career highs in points.
• UNCG will be the Lady Eagles' third Southern Conference opponent of the season. NCCU opened the season with a 62-49 loss to Western Carolina on Nov. 11 and dropped a 73-58 decision to Wofford three days later.
• The Lady Eagles have also dropped games at Campbell and West Virginia on the season.
•Chasidy Williams leads N.C. Central in scoring with 14.0 points per game, while Houston is second with 7.6. Williams also leads the squad with 7.3 rebounds per contest.
