Mylton finishes tied for second, UNCG third at SoCon Women's Golf Championship
MEBANE, N.C. – Sophomore Ashley Mylton fired a 70 on Sunday to finish tied for second and lead UNC Greensboro to a third-place finish at the rain-shortened 2006 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Mill Creek Golf Club.
Mylton, a native of Charlotte, NC, finished with a 36-hole total of 142, which tied with Western Carolina’s Bianca Melone. College of Charleston’s Angie Hill fired a 68 on Sunday to pull away for a four-shot win over Mylton and Melone.
Mylton’s second place finish was the best by a Spartan at the SoCon Championships since Jessica Fought finished second in 2001. Ironically, that is the only other time in the 14-year history of the SoCon Women’s Golf Championship that rain has shortened the tournament to 36 holes. Intermittent thunderstorms, which dropped close to an inch of rain on Saturday, forced tournament officials to shorten this year’s tournament to 36 holes.
College of Charleston won the team title for the first time ever. The Cougars carded a 585 to edge Western Carolina by two shots. The Catamounts had four golfers in the Top 8, but it wasn’t quite enough. UNCG was a solid third, 15 shots off of the pace but seven shots ahead of traditional power Furman, which finished fourth.
UNCG’s Ashley Parrott finished tied for ninth, individually. She shot 74 on Sunday, one over her season-best, to finish six-over par. Parrott, a freshman from Johnston City, TN, had not recorded a Top 20 finish yet this season.
