UNCG fourth after opening round at SoCon Championship

MT.PLEASANT, S.C. – UNC Greensboro is fourth after the opening round of the weather-shortened Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship, which is being played at the Patriots Point Golf Links.

Defending champion College of Charleston shot an opening round 307 to take the team lead, five shots better than Western Carolina. Furman is seven shots back, followed by UNCG in fourth at 317.

Freshman Annelie Weimenhog recorded UNCG’s best score of the day on Monday with a 78. She is tied for seventh, four shots off of the lead. College of Charleston’s Megan Miller is first after shooting an opening round 74.

Heavy rains and winds gusting over 50 miles per hour cancelled play on Sunday and shortened the tournament to 36 holes. It is the second consecutive year that the tournament was cut short by inclement weather.

Windy conditions still existed on Monday as evident by the scores on the back side of the course. Miller’s 37 was the best Back 9 score. Only 10 of the 40 golfers shot under 40 on the back side, one of them being Weimenhog.

UNCG’s Gabby DiMora and Sofia Aidemark are both tied for 15th place after shooting 80 on Monday.

Tuesday’s final round gets underway at 7:30 am.
