Spartans 15th after opening round at Bryan National

BROWN SUMMIT, N.C. – UNC Greensboro is 15th among 18 teams after the opening round of the 2008 Bryan National at Bryan Park Golf Course’s Players Course.

Top-ranked Duke leads the team standings with a 294, four shots better than Florida and six shots better than North Carolina. UNCG shot an opening round 314 to earn its 15th place standing in a field that features eight teams ranked in this week’s Golfweek Top 25.

Ashley Mylton led the Spartans with a 76 in Friday’s opening round. She sits seven shots off the pace. College of Charleston’s Steffi Kirchmayr was the story of the opening round, carding a 69 to take the lead after 18 holes. Kirchmayr started out on the seventh hole was even after she finished the 18th hole with just two birdies and two bogeys. However, she birdied the second, third and fourth holes to gain the lead and finish the day at three-under.

Kirchmayr leads the trio of Duke’s Amanda Blumerherst, Arkansas’ Stacy Lewis and North Carolina State’s Lauren Doughtie by one shot. Only five golfers shot under par on Friday. Blumerherst, one of the top players in the nation, bounced back from a bumpy morning to catch fire in her last nine holes. Starting out on No. 10, Blumerherst played the back side of the course in 39. However, she shot 31 on the front side to finish with a 70 and just one shot off the lead.

Saturday’s second round gets underway at 10 am with a shotgun start.
