Final round 299 lifts UNCG to 18th at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. – UNC Greensboro had its best round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding a team total 299 in the final round of the Cougar Classic women’s golf tournament to finish 18th in the season opening tournament at Yeamans Hall GC.

Georgia held off a late charge by Alabama for the team title. Alabama shot 282 on Tuesday to erase a good portion of the big lead that the Bulldogs had amassed yesterday. However, in the end, Georgia came away with a five-shot win.

Florida State’s Carolina Westrup won individual honors, shooting a 66 on the final day to come back for the win. Westrup started the day among a quartet of players tied for second place behind Georgia’s Mallory Hetzel. Hetzel faltered on Tuesday, however, shooting a 74.

Annelie Weimenhog carded the best round of the day for UNCG with a 74, while Erica Creed, Lauren Smith and Sofia Aidemark each shot 75. With a shotgun format, Weimenhog started out on No. 15 and recorded consecutive bogeys. But she settled down from there to play the next 11 holes at two-under and finish the front side of the course in 34.

The Spartans return to action October 3 when they begin play at the Lady Tar Heel in Chapel Hill, NC.
