UNCG takes over lead on second day at Starmount

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro carded a team score of 293 to pass defending tournament champion East Carolina and take over the top spot after two rounds at the UNCG-Starmount Fall Classic women’s golf tournament at historic Starmount Forest Golf Club.

The Spartans bettered the Pirates by five shots on the day to erase a three-shot deficit and lead by two heading into Tuesday’s final round. UNCG had a trio of golfers record rounds of 73 on Monday. Annelie Weimenhog and Ashley Parrott are among a quartet of golfers tied for second place after shooting 73 for the second straight day. Sofia Aidemark, a junior from Laholm, Sweden, bounced back from a 78 Sunday to also shoot 73 on Monday, while freshman Lauren Smith had the biggest turnaround of the day, going from an 87 on Sunday to a 74 in Monday’s second round.

East Carolina’s Abby Bools is still the individual leader, although she shot a 75 on Monday and her lead is now just three shots instead of the four-shot advantage she had to begin the day. She played the front side in 36, but had consecutive bogeys at Nos. 12 and 13 on her way to 39 on the back.

Weimenhog, a junior from Kattarp, Sweden, finished strong with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to finish the back side in 35 to pull into the four-way tie for second place. Parrott, a senior from Johnston City, TN, made par on each of her last seven holes to get into the tie for second along with UNC Wilmington’s Ashley Tait and Illinois State’s Stacey Miller. Those two had the best scores of the day with Tait carding even-par 71 and Miller following up with a 72.

Tuesday’s final round gets underway at 8:30 am with tee times off of No. 1. Tee times at No. 10 begin at 8:45 am. UNCG’s groups will go off of No. 1 tee beginning with the 10:09 am group.
