FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. - Courtney Taylor of Gastonia, N.C., fired a one-under-par round of 70 to capture the 43rd Twin States Junior Girls' Golf Championship hosted by Bentwinds Golf and Country Club on Wednesday.
The win was her fifth CGA Junior Championship title. Taylor, who will be a freshman at UNCG in the fall, told reporters afterwards that this win was bittersweet.
"I am sad that this is my last junior championship but I am happy and excited to get to college and start another chapter of my life." Taylor finished strong carding three birdies on the inward nine with two of those birdies made on #16 and #17. "I felt pretty focused out there," Taylor said.
"I just kept trying to hit it close." Taylor hit her approach shot over the 18th green but was able to get up and down for a par and the win. "I played pretty steady today, I was just trying to make a lot of pars but all of a sudden Lori Beth (Adams) and Anne Marie (Covar) started making birdies and I knew it was time to become more aggressive on the greens," said Taylor.
Defending champion Anne Marie Covar of Edgefield, SC was tied for the lead heading into 18 when she missed the green in regulation and was unable to get up and down to force a playoff with Taylor.
The championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association which is celebrating its 100th year anniversary this year.
