UNCG sits second after opening round at SoCon, Taylor in third

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - UNC Greensboro carded an opening round 306 to sit in a tie for second place entering Monday's second round at the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship at Moss Creek GC's North Course.

College of Charleston has the lead after the opening round, shooting a team total of 300. UNCG and Chattanooga are tied for second at 306, followed by Furman in fourth at 315.

UNCG's freshman Courtney Taylor is in contention, tied for third after an opening round 74. Taylor overcame an early double-bogey at No. 4 to finish the day at two-over. She birdied Nos. 9 and 10 to get back to even par, but bogeyed Nos. 14 and 16 late to close out the day at two over.

Appalachian State's Yue Xu was the story of the day, however. Xu shot a season-best 69 to take the opening round lead by four shots over College of Charleston's Leigh Whittaker. Xu came into the tournament averaging 76.55 strokes in 11 rounds on the year, but went out in 34 and came back in 35 to hold the lead entering Monday's second round.

UNCG's Anneile Weimenhog is also in the Top 10, sitting in a tie for seventh after an opening round 76.

Monday's second round gets underway at 9 a.m. UNCG gets going in the 10:30 a.m. pairing.
