Five Spartans in top 10, UNCG winds up second at Starmount
GREENSBORO, N.C. - On a blustery day at historic Starmount Country Club, tournament host UNC Greensboro shot a final-round 304, but it wasn't enough to catch Campbell which won the team title with a tournament record 887 for 54 holes at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic.
UNCG shot a 303 in the final round last year and won the tournament in a playoff. This year, however, the 304 wasn't enough to overcome a five-shot deficit at the start of the day. Campbell broke the record of 894 set last year by UNCG and East Carolina. Ironically, UNCG finished with an 894 this season to finish second. The 894 also tied UNCG's best-ever 54-hole tournament score.
The Spartans placed five golfers in the top 10 of the individual standings. Annelie Weimenhog and Erica Creed finished tied for fifth, while freshman Courtney Taylor was tied for seventh. Lauren Smith and Sofia Aidemark, who was playing as an individual, were part of a three-way tie for 10th place.
Campbell's Mary Mattson, who entered the day with a five-shot lead, held on for the victory. Despite shooting a 78 in the final round, Mattson was three shots better than teammate Teresa Arocena. Campbell's Belen Diaz Cisneros had the only sub-par round of the day, carding a 70 on the par-71 course at Starmount.
UNCG returns to action next Monday when it travels to the Northwestern University Invite in Chicago, Ill.
