CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshman Fanny Cnops shot a 3-under par 69 and moved up 27 places into a tie for 20th during the second round of play at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic on Monday at Yeamans Hall Club.
Overall, the Spartans shot 317 on Monday and are 19th among 22 teams at 617 (305-312). North Carolina leads the field at 567, followed by Florida (568), LSU (571) and NC State (577). Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia are tied for fifth at 581.
Teeing off on the 10th hole, Cnops carded three birdies and a bogey on her first nine holes to make the turn at 2-under. She birdied her 12th hole (No. 3) and finished her round with six consecutive pars to finish at 69.
After two rounds, Cnops is tied for 20th at even-par 144. She trails Tennessee's Erica Popson (-9) by nine strokes.
While Cnops was exceling, the rest of the Spartans struggled during the second round.
Junior Courtney Taylor fired a 6-over 78 and moved into a tie for 74th at 154 (76-78). Senior Ana Lucia Martinez shot an 81 and is tied for 95th at 158.
Senior Begona Sarabia carded an 84 and sits in a tie for 105th at 162, while freshman Berglind Bjornsdottir shot 91 and is 115th.
The third and final round gets underway with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
