Women’s Golf set to host Starmount Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. — UNCG women's golf hosts the fifth annual UNCG Starmount Fall Classic, Oct. 2-4 at Starmount Forest Country Club.

Teams from the ACC, Atlantic Sun Conference, Big South Conference, Colonial Athletic Association and the Southern Conference will be participating in the 14-team event. The tournament consists of three days of 18 holes each, with start times each day beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The Spartans, who last time out finished tied for third at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate on Sept. 20, will be looking for consecutive top-five tournament finishes for the first time since 2008.

Freshman Fanny Cnops leads the Spartans and ranks second in the SoCon with a 71.20 stroke average. In her first two collegiate tournaments, Cnops has tied school records for the best 54-hole (216) and 36-hole (140) tournament scores. She currently ranks 36th in the latest Golfstat Cup Standings, which ranks the nation's top players, and is 13th among players who have participated in more than one tournament.

The public is invited to attend the tournament. There is no admission charge.

UNCG Notes: After tying for third at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate on Sept. 20, the Spartans are looking to finish in the top five of consecutive tournaments for the first time since April 2008, when UNCG finished finished second at the UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational and second at the Southern Conference Championships … freshman Fanny Cnops leads the Spartans and ranks second in the SoCon with a 71.20 stroke average … in her first two collegiate tournaments, Cnops has tied school records for the best 54-hole (216) and 36-hole (140) tournament scores … Cnops currently ranks 36th in the latest Golfstat Cup Standings which ranks the nation's top players … Cnops ranks 13th among players who have participated in more than one tournament … Courtney Taylor is 14th in the SoCon with a 76.40 stroke average while Ana Lucia Martinez (76.60) is 16th and Begona Sarabia (76.80) is 18th.

Tournament Notes: UNCG is hosting the Starmount Fall Classic for the fifth straight year … UNCG's only win in the tournament came in 2008 when the Spartans edged East Carolina in a playoff … past team champions include East Carolina (2007, 2010), UNCG (2008) and Campbell (2009).
