Women’s golf second at ECU Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, Cnops tied for lead

GREENVILLE, N.C. – UNCG is in second place after shooting a two-round score of 585 and Fanny Cnops is tied for the individual lead at 5-under par at the East Carolina Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, which began Monday at Greenville Country Club.

The Spartans opened play with a 294 during the first round and shot 291 during the second round, one stroke shy of tying the school record. UNCG trails overall leader East Carolina (583) by two strokes in the 20-team tournament with Tuesday's final round remaining.

Several Spartans enjoyed strong days, especially during the second round as all five golfers shot 77 or better. But none were better than Cnops.

Cnops, who entered play on Monday ranked 70th nationally while also leading the Southern Conference with a 72.50 stroke average, did nothing to tarnish her standing during the first two rounds. The freshman led the Spartans by shooting a combined score of 139 (69-70). In 36 holes, Cnops posted nine birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey. After starting her first round with a double bogey, Cnops played the remaining 17 holes in 5-under par, finishing the first round at 3-under. She shot 2-under during the second round.

Ana Lucia Martinez continued her recent fine play for the Spartans by shooting 2-over par 146 (74-72) and sits in a tie for 14th with two others.

Begona Sarabia is tied for 17th after shooting 147 (73-74), while Courtney Taylor is tied with nine others for 46th at 153 (78-75). Berglind Bjornsdottir is 82nd at 159 (82-77).

The third and final round is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
