Fanny Cnops To Represent Belgium At World Amateur Team Championships
ANTAYLA, TURKEY – UNCG sophomore women's golfer Fanny Cnops (Gent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan) has been chosen to represent her home country of Belgium in the 2012 World Amateur Team Championships conducted by the International Golf Federation in Antalya, Turkey September 27-30. The World Amateur Team Championships will be played at the Gloria Golf Club (Old and New Courses) on the Mediterranean Sea with live scoring provided by Golf Stat and a link available on www.uncgspartans.com.
Cnops, the reigning Southern Conference Player and Freshman of the Year, leads the league with a 72.0 stroke average this season after two events, including a league-best single-round score of 4-under 68 at the Cardinal Cup last week. She became the league's first every player to sweep the two major awards last season as she recorded a 72.34 stroke average in 29 rounds.
Cnops already has turned in a strong showing through two tournaments of her sophomore campaign as she finished second overall at the Cardinal Cup in Louisville, Ky. She finished the 54-hole event 2-under par 214 (73-73-68) on her way to earning UNCG's Top Spartan Performer Monday morning. Her play in the World Amateur Team Championship will cause her to miss the Spartans' Starmount Forest Tournament Oct. 1-2.
Each team in the World Team Amateur Championship has two or three players, who will each play 18 holes of stroke play over four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team's score for the championship, playing for the Espirito Santo Trophy, which is awarded to the winning country for the ensuing two years.
The Old and New Course at Gloria Golf Club will be set up at 6,203 yards and 6,196 yards, respectively, and both will play to par of 37-35-72. All players must be amateur golfers under the Rules of Amateur Status and must be citizens of the countries they represent.
