Women's Golf Holds Day One Of Starmount Forest Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's golf program held the first day of its annual fall tournament on a rainy Monday as the 16 teams played 36-holes in the 2012 Starmount Forest Tournament at the Starmount Forest Country Club. The tournament will conclude Tuesday with an 18-hole third round set for a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

East Tennessee State leads the tournament after 36 holes, firing a 2-over par 570 (287-283) to lead the team portion hold an eight-stroke edge over defending champions Maryland (578=287-291). The Spartans sit in 14th place with a score of 639 (331-308) as they improved their round two score 23 strokes from the first round that was played a majority of time in the rain.
 
East Carolina's Frida Gustafsson Spang leads the tournament individually with a 6-under par 136 as she shot a tournament-low 66 in round one before posting a 70 in round two. Maryland's Juliet Vongphoumy is second four shots back at 2-under par as just three players posted scores under the par-71 total in the wet Monday.
 
UNCG was paced by senior Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C/Ashbrook) who sits in a tie for 32nd place with a 153 (80-73). Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) is tied for 49th with a score of 156 (81-75) while freshman Samantha Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) is in 69th place with a score of 162 (83-79). The Spartans are playing without sophomore Fanny Cnops (Gent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan) who missed the tournament due to her play in the 2012 World Team Championships where she placed 12th overall for Belgium.
