Cnops Finishes 12th Overall At Florida State Match-Up
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- UNCG sophomore women's golfer Fanny Cnops (Gent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan) placed 12th overall at the inaugural Florida State Match-Up event this weekend to lead the Spartans to an 11th place finish at the Southwood Golf Course.
"Unfortunately, the weather this weekend wasn't very nice but overall it was a very good start to our spring season," head coach Sarah Sargent said. "We had a lot of positive things happen this weekend and we will continue to work towards our next tournament at Kiawah Island, where we have won the event before."
Cnops, the reigning Southern Conference Golfer of the Year, posted a three-day, 54-hole score of 6-over par 222 (77-72-73) to finish eight shots off the lead. Cnops' final two round score of 145 was tied for fifth-lowest over the last two days. She finished eight shots behind tournament co-champions Eric Popson of Tennessee and Rocio Sanchez Lobato of Georgia at 2-under par 214.
The 16th ranked Georgia Bulldogs won the event with a score of 877 to finish four shots in front of No. 6 Oklahoma and five shots ahead of No. 33 Tennessee. The Spartans finished with a three-round team score of 932 (314-310-308).
Freshman Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) placed tied for 36th overall with a score of 231 (78-74-79) while senior Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C./Ashbrook) turned in a 53rd place finish with a score of 237 (80-80-77). Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) carded a 246 (83-84-79) while Andrea Rangel (Bogota, Columbia/Colegio la Presentacion) came in with a 252 (79-90-83).
The Spartans return to action March 3-5 when they take part in the Kiawah Invitational at the Cougar Point Golf Club hosted by the College of Charleston.
