Cnops Finishes Third, Women's Golf Fifth At Kiawah Island Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's golf team closed out the 33rd annual Kiawah Island Classic Tuesday with a score of 304 in round three to move up to fifth place overall in the standings on the Cougar Point Golf Course. Sophomore Fanny Cnops (Gent, Belgium/K.A. Voskenslaan) ended the tournament in third place overall with a 5-over par score Tuesday earning All-Tournament accolades for the second straight year at the event.

Cnops, the reigning Kiawah Island Classic champion, came within six holes of winning her second straight title at the event. She held the overall lead after 12 holes played in the final round, boasting a 1-under par advantage in the round before posting a bogey on No. 16 and an uncharacteristic triple-bogey on No. 17 to fall out of the lead. She maintained par over the final four holes to finish the day 3-over par, carding a 221 (77-69-75), two shots back of the leader Julie Neumann of the College of Charleston.

UNCG, which opened the tournament in 13th place after round one, moved up eight spots to finish in the top five with a score of 917 (314-299-304). The Spartans were just three shots out of fourth place held by Richmond while also trailing tournament winner Campbell (899), the College of Charleston (902) and Troy (906).

Senior Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C./Ashbrook) continued her climb up the leaderboard as well Tuesday as she finished with her best round of the tournament, firing a 2-over par 74. Taylor finished the 54-hole event in a tie for 21st with a 228 (77-77-74), including posting her first career hole-in-one during the opening round.

Freshman Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) recorded a 35th place finish in the event with a score of 232 (76-77-79). Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) posted her second straight 4-over par 76 to close out the event in 62nd place with a 236 (84-76-76).

The Spartans return to action March 15-16 as they travel to Tucson, Ariz., for the Mountain View Collegiate hosted by Kansas State at the Mountain View Country Club.
