Player, Ryan listed in NCAA National Ranking Summary

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team is ranked nationally in all five categories listed in the NCAA final women’s soccer statistics released earlier this week. Two individuals, Kristin Player and Katherine Ryan, have also made the Top 100 list.

As a team, the Spartans are ranked ninth in shutout percentage with a season-ending .591 shutouts per game. Villanova tops the list with a.667 average. Two Southern Conference opponents are also ranked. Appalachian State is 11th with .579 and Davidson is No. 35 with .500

UNCG is also in the Top 25 with a .750 win-loss-tied percentage following at 16-5-1 season. No. 1 UCLA holds the top rank following a season record of 20-2-2. Davidson is listed 33rd (14-5-1, .725) and Furman is 35th (16-6-1, .717).

In offensive scoring, the 2007 squad is in the 34th spot. The Spartans tallied 45 goals in 22 games for an average of 2.05 goals per game. Jackson State is the top team with a 3.59 average, Furman is fifth with 64 goals in 23 games (2.78), and Davidson is tied for 60th after scoring 37 goals in 20 games (1.85).

The Spartans finished the season with a .83 save percentage to put them in the 55th spot. The team of Ryan and freshman Barrie Vogel made 93 saves with just 19 goals against. No. 30 Louisville and Villanova are tied for the top spot with 96 saves and just 11 goals against, Davidson is 38th with 92 saves and 17 goals against (.844), and Appalachian State is 46th with 88 saves and 17 goals against (.838).

Freshman Kristin Player made the Top 100 in two categories. The forward from Placentia, CA, is ranked 77th in both points per game and goals per game. She recorded a 1.32 points per game average after tallying 10 goals and five assists for a total of 25 points in just 19 games. Her 10 goals also gave her a .526 goals per game average. Player scored two goals in the 4-1 win over Chattanooga on Oct. 4.

Senior Katherine Ryan is ranked 67th in save percentage. The goalkeeper from Pittsboro, NC, tallied 84 saves in 18 games and allowed just 18 goals. She collected a career-high 11 saves in the NCAA first-round game against No. 3 North Carolina. This season alone, Ryan amassed nine shutouts to take her career total to 20. 

The Spartans finished the season in the midst of a 20-game regular-season conference unbeaten streak dating back to Sept. 24, 2006, and broke two UNCG women’s soccer records.

The squad set a new record in fewest away losses after losing zero road games. The previous record of two was set in 1993 and 1996. They also set a new win streak record after winning 12 in a row to better last season’s record of 10. The team’s five losses this year tied the previous record set in 1989, 1990, 1995, and 2004.
